Early Learning Program

The BGCSCT’s youngest members are enrolled in the Early Learning Program at either Texas Preparatory School or the Mitchell Center. Our members enjoy everything this program has to offer from the hours of 7:00 am to 6:30 pm all year round. The program reinforces the academic and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the club. This strategy is based on research demonstrating that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial activities.

Youth Development Professionals (YDPs) implement high-yield learning activities to the early learning members in the following areas:

Arts and Crafts

BGCSCT YDPs create a learning environment conducive for creativity as members paint, draw and make crafts during arts and crafts time. They work one-on-one with members to guide them through creating art that makes stories come alive, puts the holidays in their hands and adorns them with their own jewelry. Implemented with encouragement and care, these high-yield activities provide youth with fun experiences that are hands-on, interactive, and develop critical thinking. BGCSCT arts and craft time cultivates creativity, imagination and self-expression in young members.

Music and Movement

YDPs take time each day to provide an environment rich with music and movement that allows for the exploration of musical instrumentation and engages children in diverse, stimulating musical activities. As young members play, sing, and dance to music, they increase both fine and gross motor skills and learn to have better control over their bodies.

Triple Play

YDPs adapt the BGCSCT’s Triple Play program to meet the needs of its youngest members as they visit the playground to engage in free play as well as organized activities. Young members become physically active outdoors while involved in activities such as jumping rope; learning the early fundamental of sports, such as dribbling, passing and kicking; and playing active games like Duck-Duck-Goose, Ring Around the Rosies, Tag and Hide-and-Go-Seek. The goal of Triple Play is to encourage even the youngest members to become more physically active through fun fitness routines.

Healthy Habits

Guiding members to make healthy lifestyle choices at an early age helps them build life-long habits that promote their overall well-being. YDPs implement learning activities that teach members to eat healthy foods and stay active in order to benefit their mind, body and soul. They introduce young members to the USDA’s MyPyramid to teach them the importance of choosing a wide variety of foods, which builds a foundation that equips young people with skills to adopt healthier habits.
