SAN MARCOS, TX, Oct. 14, 2011 – The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas will host a “Storybook Parade” Friday, October 28, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Children and all book lovers will attend dressed as his or her favorite storybook character.

Texas State University and Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas have begun to forge a working relationship in the name of “Fitness”. Texas State’s Health & Human Performance Department and the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas since February have been working closely to create a bridge to post secondary education through Physical Fitness for Elementary aged students.

Texas Preparatory School students have traveled to TxU’s H&HP Department Building, Jowers, for P.E. class; have had Texas State H&HP student majors observe classes on-campus(TPS) and perform the statewide PE Fitness assessment, FITNESSGRAM. Dr. Karen Meaney, Associate Professor, and her team consisting of Dr. Jen Ahrens and Prof. Tammy Rainey, have created an element in which their Texas State H&HP student majors get hands-on experience with elementary aged children.

This program exposes Boys & Girls Club youth to the Texas State University campus and promotes collegiate level achievement from College and Elementary students alike. The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas will be looking forward to continuing this relationship through the Summer Months as part of the Summer Academic & Enrichment Program and in the Fall of 2011.

This Spring has marked a series of College Campus Visits for local CLUB teenagers. The San Marvelous Heroes and the Keystone Club have visited various College Campuses in the South Central Texas area. The Step Your College Game Up Tour began late December with St. Edward’s University and since then these youth have visited Texas State University, University of Texas and Texas Lutheran University.

Each college tour is to familiarize TEENS with a college experience that they all can achieve. The tours expose the CLUB members to college entrance exams, dorm halls and college admissions processes. For many CLUB members, these trips have been the first time they haved stepped foot onto a College Campus.

The Step Your College Game Up tours ends its last tour at Texas Lutheran University, April 16. For more information on BGCSCT Teen Services please call Ms. Joanna Garcia @ 512.667.4497.
